The most burgled towns in Britain where thieves steal £5,117 per home
By Kate Palmer
It's labelled "Corned Beef City" and is home to Britain's largest conglomeration of council houses, but Dagenham has earned a new title - Britain's most burgled town.
Homes in the Essex-London postcode, RM8, were most likely to be burgled in the previous year, with 5.5pc of households falling victim, according to insurance claims data.
Comparison website Moneysupermarket tracked millions of theft claims made to major insurers in the previous 12 months.
Burglars stole £5,117 worth of goods, on average, in each household they targeted in Dagenham and Becontree.
The area has seen a recent affluence boost, with a 15pc year-on-year rise in house prices according to Nationwide figures. Half a century earlier, the residents were said to be so poor that they lived on canned food - hence the "Corned Beef" nickname.
By contrast, fewer than 0.1pc of homes were burgled last year in Lochee, Dumfries and Aldochlay, Scotland.
Insurers pay out £8.1m per day in domestic property claims, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers, the industry body.
Theft is the third-most common type of home insurance claim (16pc of claims), behind problems relating to burst water pipes or escaped water (24pc of claims) and weather-related claims (17pc of claims).
Insurance costs double in theft hotspots
Householders are 55 times more likely to be burgled in Dagenham, home to Britain's largest council estate of 27,000 homes, than they are in Dundee.
To reflect this, the cost of building and contents cover is £132 in the high-risk area and £109 in the low-risk area.
But someone living in RM8 will pay double that of a Dundee resident if they have already made a claim for theft, paying £203 to insure their buildings and contents in a typical family home.
